ASHLEY, near King's Somborne
Not in Domesday Book as Gover claims; that is Ashley near New Milton (see below). Hypothetical Old English 'AEscleah'='ash wood'. There are two other ASHLEYs having the same origin: one near New Milton (1086 'Esselie, Esselei') occasionally 'East Ashley' (1285 'Est Assely'); and one near Ringwood (1236 'Essileg' 1390 'North Ascheley'). The last two are named directionally in relation to each other.
